The Reflecting Fool

Perhaps nothing reflects the incompetence, dishonesty, and corruption of the Frump madministration more than its destruction and desecration of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. His vainglorious attempt to put his personal brand on the iconic monument may have backfired bigly.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was designed by Henry Bacon, and was completed in 1923. Its purpose was to reflect the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial as viewed from each other. It’s over 2,000 feet long, and sits on unstable marshland. Its size and configuration has since its construction posed challenges with water circulation and purification. It has served as a setting for memorable historical and fictional events (e.g., Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream,” and Forrest Gump’s anti-war protest).

The facts and timeline around the reflecting pool debacle have been widely reported, and were summarized succinctly by renowned American historian and professor Heather Cox Richardson in her August 1, 2026 Letters from an American, so there’s no need to rehash it. The no-plan, no-bid, no-approval, no-accountability project was the sole brainchild of the current occupant of the White House, who saw fixing the pool’s long-standing leakage and algae problems as an opportunity to make yet another mark on a national monument under the guise of the country’s 250^th birthday.

As almost anyone with a functioning cerebral cortex understood when the details of the colossal failure of the project became known, the demise of the coating installed by Atlantic Industrial Coatings (whose work Frump initially avowed then later disavowed) was due to ineffective surface preparation and inadequate curing of the material before a caravan of armored vehicles traversed its length in a puerile parade, followed almost immediately thereafter by refilling it. Frump’s claim of vandalism by someone with a boxcutter (utility knife) under almost two feet of water belied his earlier boast that the coating was virtually indestructible, a claim that became more absurd as the alleged length of the cut grew like Pinocchio’s nose from 250 feet to 300 yards (900 feet).

When algae bloomed spectacularly as a result of the dark coating causing the water to heat faster, and the stagnation of residual water in the piping, he sought to blame his predecessors, as well as felonious fertilization. In what may be the greatest of ironies, the contractor whose water purification system was supposed to keep the water clean so that the American Flag Blue coating would be featured and algae would be mitigated was a company named Greenwater Services. Its contract was also no-bid, and its owner has made substantial donations to Frump’s PACs.

Rather than backpedal or even coast until an investigation could be done to validate easily refutable wild accusations and fantasy fever-dreams, Frump apparently ordered his minions to find some evidence of vandalism and make an example of someone. In rode 67-year-old U.S. Olympic Canoeist David Hearn, nearing the end of a long June 19, 2026 bike ride, stopping at the Reflecting Pool where he’d paddled a canoe a half century earlier to draw attention to the sport. Hearn wanted to see firsthand what the news media had been reporting about the rushed renovation and the flaking finish. His curiosity got him arrested and charged with felony destruction of property, carrying a possible sentence of up to ten years in prison.

Fast forward to Friday, July 31, 2026, when erstwhile TV personality and current U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced that the charges against Hearn, which she’d previously claimed would be proven by ample evidence, were being dropped. She claimed anew that her office had been misled by the U.S. Department of the Interior, led by Inferior [sic] Secretary Doug Burgum. Once upon a time, prosecutions would have been based on evidence obtained legally through investigations, rather than hearsay from a questionable source. Her retraction was no less stunning than Frump’s almost immediate criticism of her and renewal of his now completely discredited claim of vandalism.

In almost all cases, accusations made by Frump amount to an admission of his own wrongdoings. In this case, it represents spectacular misdirection, and creation of a fictional storyline that will be difficult to put to rest, especially as he continues to insist that it’s true. It’s an apt reflection of his presidency, and the more he doubles, triples, and quadruples down on something so verifiably false, the greater the possibility that it becomes his Kryptonite.
