As a self-proclaimed mentee of Robert Hubbell and ardent follower of his Today’s Edition Newsletter on Substack, I’ve been motivated by his calls to action and support of Run For Something, and have gotten involved in local politics.
I am president of our HOA and that is as deep into elected office as I can manage. I am too old and I want to enjoy the few years left to me. That doesn't mean I won't be protesting and whining on online 'til death.
But back to the HOA. There need to be term limits. Right now it feels like a life sentence. Nobody wants the job. No pay, no vacations, no perks - except the pleasure of helping neighbors hold this place together. That does feel good. But still...
Back to the subject. I am reading about a wave of younger people running for office. Finally. Now if a few more of our antique politicians would just step away and let quicker minds fill the void, we might get somewhere better.

Thanks, Bill! In our last HOA, I was elected and served as VP. They wanted me to be President, but I much preferred second in command. in our current HOA, I was asked to run but turned it down. I'm chairman of the Facilities Committee, which is a better role for me here. We have 1425 single family homes on about 900 acres, with a championship golf course and a 38,000 SF clubhouse. Plenty to do!
Truth be told, the county committee role would have been a breeze.
Wow. That is a big HOA. We are 33 townhouses in a quiet cul de sac surrounded by woods. But. Within walking distance is a Trader Joe's, a fabulous seafood restaurant and an excellent liquor store. I am a regular at all three!
Our prior one was 40 residential units and 75 boat slips and a lagoon. There, I did the budget, capital reserve plan, projects, legal, and a bunch of other stuff. Here,I'm mire focused on projects, but I het involved in other stuff because of my experience.
A classic Bob, and your concession speech is priceless. Congratulations on your growing activism and best success in your quest to wake up a moribund organization.
